Role Overview

After a very successful period of growth over recent years CL Re has developed a significant and diverse portfolio of reinsurance transactions. A core objective of the ALM function is to drive the optimisation of our balance sheets across asset strategy, earnings, capital, liquidity and our commercial objectives. We are seeking a bright, talented and motivated individual to support and shape the development of our asset strategies. This includes both the initial development and on-going review to ensure we win new transactions and optimise existing transactions.

What you will help us to achieve

Reporting to the Head of Asset Strategy, this role would suit an experienced reporting, investment or ALM actuary who:

  • Is interested in working with assets and investments and wants to influence the development of our investment capabilities, governance and reporting.
  • Wants to be part of a forward-thinking team where creativity and problem-solving is central to what we do.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, high-change setting.
  • Is at their best in a commercial, innovative, collaborative and cross-functional environment.

Whilst this role sits within an actuarial-led ALM function, applications are equally welcome from non‑actuarial professionals with strong investment, asset strategy or ALM expertise.

You will help us to:

  • Build deep knowledge and expertise on the CL Re balance sheet, the different exposures and the associated modelling and reporting. This includes:
    • The different asset classes (fixed income, private placements, mortgages, securitised products, private credit, etc.) and the associated derivative and hedging strategies.
    • The different asset and ALM risks (credit, property, equity, interest, inflation, currency, liquidity, deployment and reinvestment risks, etc.).
  • Work in partnership with relevant CL Re teams (e.g. new business origination, ALM, Actuarial, Finance and Risk) and Great‑West Investment Division teams (e.g. CIO, Investment Operations) to:
    • Develop the Strategic Asset Allocation (SAA) for each in‑force and new business segment, including the SAA used for stress and scenario analysis.
    • Explore and develop investment solutions, including new asset classes, asset structuring, derivatives and associated hedging strategies.
    • Develop and review methodologies and assumptions for asset risk measurement and performance (e.g. defaults, downgrades, trading gains metrics).
    • Present proposals for approval at the relevant entity, Divisional and Group forums.
  • Provide investment and asset strategy support to key stakeholders and activities, including:
    • ALM reporting, financial reporting and capital reporting teams.
    • Marketing, pricing and underwriting teams.
    • Various strategic and corporate initiatives from time to time.
  • Develop and maintain efficient, effective and well‑controlled asset strategy and portfolio management processes, including supporting data, tools and systems.
  • Monitor and keep up to date with relevant Divisional, Group, industry, market, competitor and regulatory activity, assess the implications and opportunities for CL Re, and action response plans as necessary.

More specific responsibilities will include

  • Developing and maintaining a deep understanding of CL Re’s assets, liabilities and associated risks.
  • Designing, implementing and refining Strategic Asset Allocation frameworks and methodologies.
  • Assessing and recommending investment solutions and hedging strategies to optimise risk‑return outcomes.
  • Supporting ALM, financial and capital reporting through robust analysis, insight and challenge.
  • Preparing and presenting clear, well‑structured proposals and recommendations to senior stakeholders and governance forums.
  • Enhancing asset strategy and portfolio management processes, including documentation, controls and governance.
  • Leveraging data, models and tools to improve insight, efficiency and decision‑making.

What you will need to be successful in the role

The ideal candidate will have:

  • An actuarial or similarly relevant qualification, or equivalent depth of experience, with at least eight years’ relevant technical experience.
  • A commercial mindset.
  • Demonstrated interest and depth of experience across at least some of the following:
    • Investment and ALM risks (e.g. credit, interest, inflation, currency, liquidity, deployment and reinvestment).
    • Asset management, investment principles and processes, LDI investment and investment markets.
    • ALM techniques including asset and liability cash flow modelling, interest and inflation modelling, cash flow matching.
    • Financial reporting and capital reporting.
  • An appetite to explore and use the latest AI techniques and ways of working to deliver better outcomes, including operational efficiencies and deeper insights.
  • Experience working with:
    • Investment data (e.g. Bloomberg, Refinitiv, ICE Data Services).
    • Modelling tools (e.g. Excel, Prophet, Python, R).
    • Data management tools (e.g. SQL).
    • Data visualisation tools (e.g. Power BI).

  • A collaborative mindset and an appetite to work effectively in partnership with colleagues across the Dublin office, the Division and the Group, with a demonstrated capacity to build relationships, gain trust and command respect at all levels.

  • The ability to plan work, manage time effectively and work autonomously or as part of a team to ensure timely completion of deliverables, including:
    • Experience managing multiple workstreams simultaneously to demanding schedules.
    • The capacity to solve problems and make decisions effectively and efficiently.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and adapt to different audiences.
  • A high level of comfort operating in an environment with ambiguity, change and uncertain parameters.
  • Well‑developed professional judgement and ease in balancing urgency and importance.
  • A strong work ethic, a pragmatic mindset, a willingness to work to a flexible schedule and to travel occasionally.
